5 binge-worthy podcasts I’m listening to right now

October 18, 2018

If you know me, you know I love a good podcast. My obsession only started a few months ago, but I’ve been binging shamelessly, making up for lost time.

I decided to make a list (I also love a good list) of the five best podcasts I’m listening to at the moment, though I have to admit – for the sake of my dignity – I may have conveniently neglected to include some guilty pleasures. (If you want to know what those are, you’re going to have to share some of your own guilty pleasures with me too. Comment below and let me know what you’re listening to!)

Without further adieu: here are the top five (totally respectable) podcasts I’ve recently been binging.

1. The Teacher’s Pet

The Teacher’s Pet has been number one on the iTunes podcast charts for over a month now, and it’s just hit a million downloads. I’ve recently finished listening to all 15 episodes, and I couldn’t write this list without mentioning it.

In January 1982, mother-of-two Lyn Dawson, vanished from her home in Bayview, Australia. Her husband says she walked out and joined a religious cult, but everyone who knew her says Lyn would never have left her children. It’s more likely she was murdered, according to two coroners, by her husband.

For me, it’s important to remember that everybody is innocent until proven guilty. Her husband has never been tried, but detectives seem to be working hard to change that.

This series has created a media frenzy in Australia. Public pressure forced detectives to do more, so they recently dug up Lyn’s old house to see if her remains were beneath the pool. They weren’t. No one seems to be any closer to finding out what happened to Lyn.

Throughout the podcast, there’s a strong sense of anger and a desperate need for justice. Justice for Lyn, her two (now adult) daughters, her parents – who died before they could find out what happened to her – her siblings, and her friends.

This is definitely one of the best podcasts I’ve listened to. You walk away feeling deeply invested, praying that Lyn and her family somehow get justice. This unbelievable story of teachers openly having affairs with their underage students, assassins allegedly being hired, and drinks being laced with drugs makes for a truly shocking podcast.

2. Hot Copy Podcast

The Hot Copy Podcast is the podcast that gave me the courage to leave my full-time job and set up a copywriting business. Hosted by Belinder Weaver and Kate Toon, veteran copywriters turned trainers and mentors, this show is perfect for a few different types of people, including:

  • copywriters who want to become better writers
  • copywriters who want to set up (or already have) a copywriting business (that’s me!)
  • small business owners who write lots of copy and want to get better at it

Kate and Belinda have over 80 episodes, I believe. I think I listened to 77 of them in the space of a month. They know what they’re doing and they’re so eager to share their knowledge and experiences.

The other, very important, thing is that they’re actually hilarious. I find myself laughing along and agreeing with them like I’m talking to two long-time friends.

Without this podcast, InkHouse wouldn’t be what it is today! I can’t recommend it enough.

I found this episode really interesting. Why not have a listen?

Charities and NFPS: Copywriting tips from Andrea Lowe (episode 66).

3. TED Talks Daily

Sometimes, you just need to be inspired. TED Talks Daily does the trick by offering you bite-sized chunks of wisdom. Most of the episodes are between five and 15 minutes long, so you can get a quick motivational boost and be on your way.

This was one of my favourite episodes. Check it out here: The Little Risks You Can Take to Increase Your Luck (episode 31) or watch it below.

4. The Creative Penn Podcast

I recently discovered Joanna Penn, founder of The Creative Penn. I read her book How to Make a Living with Your Writing and instantly fell in love with the authority she exudes and her style of writing.

After reading her book, I wanted to check out her podcast. She started podcasting years ago, long before podcasts went mainstream. Now, she has close to 400 episodes!

In this pod, Joanna offers tips for authors or inspiring authors. She helps writers market themselves and their books, and she offers lots of great guides and useful resources on self-publishing. She also has countless interviews with hundreds of experts.

The first episode I ever listened to was pretty interesting! Joanna interviewed Emily M. Thompson, co-host of the Being Boss podcast, and co-author of Being Boss: Take Control of Your Work and Live Life on Your Own Terms.

Have a listen here (episode 24) or watch the video below.

5. Happy Place

Who doesn’t love Fearne Cotton? Really? If you’re a 90s baby like me, it’s almost mandatory that you do.

Fearne turned her book Happy Place into a podcast, and I love it. I plan to buy her book just as soon as I get through the 30 unread titles on my shelf (I wish I was exaggerating).

If I’m being entirely honest, I’ve always been a little wary of celebrities-turned-writers. For starters, there’s usually a good chance they didn’t even write the book (urgh). But I should’ve known Fearne wouldn’t let me down.

In her show, she interviews other famous people like author Matt Haig and Stephen Fry, and talks to them about happiness, sadness, depression, life, and how we can each find our own little happy place.

My only complaint is that I didn’t know a lot of the ‘famous’ people she interviewed – but that might just be because I’m completely out of touch with popular culture (I called Ed Sheeran ‘Ed Shiraan’ for years).

Here’s the link to my favourite Happy Place show, which stars author Matt Haig (episode 8).

What about you? What podcasts are you listening to?

I’m looking for my next binging opportunity, so I could really do with some recommendations. Comment and let me know!
